Video interview retakes: give more time or let candidates start over

Retakes are on every VoxScreen plan, the free one included, with no limit. Candidates re-record any answer as often as they like before sending it. If the clock runs out or a camera fails, you give them more time or let them start over in one click.

A retake in a one-way video interview is a second attempt at an answer. In most tools it means one thing: a cap on how many times a candidate may re-record each question, set before the interview starts. VoxScreen covers that moment and the one after it. Candidates re-record freely while they answer, and when an interview runs out of time or goes wrong, the team decides whether to give more time or let the candidate start over.

Two ways to give a second chance

Open the candidate's interview, choose Retake and pick one. Either way, the candidate is emailed a link back to the interview.

Give more time

Keeps every answer the candidate recorded and gives a fresh clock for the questions left. The right choice when the time ran out, a camera stopped halfway or the connection dropped.

Start over

Deletes the recordings, their transcripts, the scores and the AI summary, and the candidate answers every question again from the beginning. You confirm before anything is deleted, because it can't be undone.

When teams use it

  • The clock ran out. VoxScreen times the whole interview, so a candidate who spends too long on one answer can run out before the last question.
  • Something broke. A camera stopped, a call interrupted the recording, the connection dropped. The candidate was ready and the technology wasn't.
  • The candidate asked for another go. A reply to the invitation email goes straight to your team, so the request reaches someone who can grant it.
  • A school or programme grants a retake. Admissions teams already decide this case by case for other assessments, and the decision stays theirs here too.

What happens after you choose

  1. 1 The candidate gets an email in the interview's language, with your logo, saying what changed and linking back to the interview. Replies come to you.
  2. 2 The clock starts when the candidate begins the interview again, not when you click, so none of the time runs down while the email waits.
  3. 3 When they finish, every answer is transcribed and scored again, so the ranking still compares everyone on the same rubric.
  4. 4 The candidate's page shows who gave the retake and when.

What it costs: nothing, on any plan

Retakes have no limit and no fee on any plan, the free one included. A retake doesn't count as a new candidate either: VoxScreen counts a candidate once, by email address, so the same person recording again uses none of your allowance.

How other tools handle retakes

Most tools in this category let you cap retakes per question before the interview starts. Fewer say what happens after it ends. On several, a redo means deleting answers or sending a new invitation by hand, and the candidate's help centre tells them it is up to the employer.

What this does not do

Three things people sometimes mean by "retakes" aren't here, and it is cheaper to find that out on this page than after signing up.

  • No per-question take limit. Candidates re-record any answer as often as they like while the clock runs. If you want one take only, or a cap such as three, Spark Hire, Hireflix and OneWayInterview set takes per question.
  • No deadline extension for one candidate. If the job's deadline has passed, you set a later one on the job, which reopens the interview to everyone with the link.
  • No retake button for candidates. A retake is your team's decision. Candidates ask for one by replying to the invitation email.

Common questions

Can candidates retake a one-way video interview on VoxScreen?

Yes, in two ways. While answering, they can re-record any answer as often as they like before sending it. After the interview, your team can give them more time or let them start over, on any plan and with no limit.

What happens to the answers they already recorded?

With Give more time, they stay and the candidate carries on with the questions left. With Start over, they are deleted along with their transcripts and scores, after you confirm.

Does a retake use up a candidate from my plan?

No. A candidate is counted once, by email address, so recording again costs nothing. Retakes have no limit on any plan, the free one included.

Can I limit how many times a candidate re-records a question?

No. VoxScreen has no per-question take limit and no single-take mode. The whole interview has one time limit, and inside it a candidate can re-record freely. If a fixed number of takes matters to you, a tool that sets them per question is the better fit.

How does the candidate find out?

They get an email with a link back to the interview, in the interview's language and with your logo. The time limit starts again only when they begin.

What if the interview's deadline has passed?

Set a later deadline on the job and retakes become available again. That reopens the interview to everyone who has the link, not only to one candidate.

Run your next interview with retakes included

Set up an interview in five minutes and send one link. The free plan needs no card and includes unlimited retakes.
